Conceited Independence

Welcome to Conceitedindependence.com - this is a personal website. I chose this (very long) domain name based on one of my favorite quotes from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice:
"To walk three miles, or four miles, or five miles, or whatever it is, above her ankles in dirt, and alone, quite alone! What could she mean by it? It seems to me to show an abominable sort of conceited independence,a most country town indifference to decorum." - Chapter 8
This is the opinion expressed by Miss Bingley after Lizzie has the nerve to tromp across the countryside to visit her sick sister.
The site motto (on the left there) is also a quote about our heroine from Miss Bingley:
"In her air altogether there is a self-sufficiency without fashion, which is intolerable." - Chapter 45
I'll leave it to you to decide to what degree either of these remarks might describe myself...
(BTW, you can read the full text of Pride and Prejudice for free at Project Gutenburg.)
As for what's on this site, several completely unrelated things. It's mainly a repository for my various interests and hobbies as they come and go. Some sections inevitably disappear or fade with time. My nutria page has been up for several years, though I almost never update it now. I also have a Doll Gallery I put up during a brief fling with ball-joint dolls (I still enjoy my current dolls, but I don't follow or participate in the "fandom" much these days). I've been interested in Japan since I was a teenager, and my most enduring love is its Takarazuka Revue. The biggest portion of my site is the Takarazuka section, which includes a great many translations I've done over the years.
